Domaine Guy Roulot Les Meix Chavaux 2010

Domaine Guy Roulot is an old family estate based in Meursault. Managed by Jean-Marc Roulot, a master winemaker, comedian and he also happens to be married to Alix de Montille (daughter of famous Volnay producer, Hubert de Montille).

The estate was developed by Jean-Marc's father, Guy Roulot, even though the family had begun to purchase vineyards in the early 20th century. Guy Roulot was the pioneer in the region for bottling his wines at the estate, and not only the high-end ones like some estates did at the time. His tragic death in 1982 left Jean-Marc's mother Geneviève looking for someone to take on the winemaking responsibilities. With the help of Jacques Seysses, she found a young American who had studied oenology in Burgundy and had been an apprentice at Domaine Dujac: Ted Lemon. He was only 25 years old then but did a good job at keeping Guy Roulot's characteristic style. Ted Lemon was then followed as winemaker by Franck Grux.

Jean-Marc, who had been pursuing his acting career in Paris, decided to return to Meursault in 1988 and has been managing the estate with his sister, Michelle, since his return. He progressively turned the estate organic and increased the vineyard surface from about 11 ha to approximately 15 ha.

The Mosaic team recently had the opportunity to taste some amazing wines as part of a blind tasting lecture by Debi van Flymen, well-known wine lover and Cape Wine Master.  Part of the line-up for the evening was the Domaine Guy Roulot Les Meix Chavaux 2010.  Meix Chavaux is a village vineyard, considered exceptional and therefore worthy of the singular recognition awarded to premier cru vineyards - though in this instance it's as lieu-dit.  Meix Chavaux is one of the lieu-dit vineyards positioned in line with Meursault's premier cru vineyards - and subsequently delivers the rich generosity of classic Meursault.  (Meix means house, like Mas in Provencal, and Chavaux means "chef val" in old French, or uphill from the valley.)

Cultivar:  Chardonnay (100%).

Winemaker:  Jean-Marc Roulot.

Ullage:  No ullage.

Cork: Cork in excellent condition.

Color:  Beautiful and brilliant sunshine-gold color.

Bouquet:  After some time in the glass the nose gradually reveals a crisp minerality, with lovely yellow fruit spiced with citrus notes and gunpowder. Some toasted buttery notes also evident on the nose.

Palate:  On the palate very focused and pure Chardonnay flavors of citrus and vanilla with fine mid-palate concentration and length. The acidity is very crisp and zesty – transparent with a good expression of terroir. A wine that shows what a cool climate Meursault can be! A classic Burgundian Chardonnay.

Notes:  We would recommend this wine to drink now or keep for another 5 years.

Score:  91/100

Santé!
